Motorcycle Chains are the best way of keeping your bike secure from thieves. Especially when you’re able to lock the chain to something like a post or ground-anchor. But even without locking to something, a thick hardened steel chain is enough to put off most theft attempts. If you have the ability to carry a chain round with your bike (top box or under seat storage) then I’d really recommend doing so, I’ve been the victim of a bike theft and as you can imagine it ain’t nice.

When deciding which is the best chain lock for your motorcycle we use a simple set of criteria:

It must be extremely tough

It’s true that any lock will do a certain degree or deterring a thief, but we’re looking for the real tough chains here, those that even the most determined of thieves will struggle with.

It mustn’t break the bank

We’re keeping our budget at a maximum of £100 for this review, there’s plenty of real tough chains out there for that budget and there’s no need to be paying more.

Top 5 Motorbike chain locks

Oxford Hardcore XL 13 motorbike Chain lock

1. Our Top Pick – Oxford Hardcore XL 13 Chain and Padlock

Price: £54.88 (Normally £99.99)
For me, this lock offers the very best in price vs quality. It’s insanely well made and incredibly tough for something at the price point. Even at the £99.99 it’s still a good buy. Which is why, if you’re still seeing it at the lower price, it’s our top pick.

This Thatcham approved lock is made with extremely thick 13mm square chain links and is all tied together by the ultra tough padlock with a hardened boron steel armour casing. If you have, or are considering one, it works with Oxford’s Anchor Force ground anchor. The looks of this beast alone are enough to put off most thieves.

It’s available in 1.2m, 1.5m and 2m lengths.

Oxford HD Chain

2. Oxford HD Chain

Price: £34.95 (Normally £54.99)
For those looking for something a little more portable or those budget conscious bikers, this piece of kit will work a treat. The lightweight (just 2.6kg for the 1m) lock will easily fit into a rucksack or underseat storage providing a very strong and substantial piece of security for your bike. The hardened 9.5mm square link chain will provide enough strength to deter most thieves. And if you’re unable to carry the chain you can use the padlock independently as a disc lock. With over 200 reviews and an average of 4.5/5 at SportsBikeShop, it’s easy to see why this motorcycle chain comes in at number 2 for us.

It’s available in 1m, 1.5m and 2m lengths.

Oxford Monster XL Motorbike chain lock

3. Oxford Monster XL Chain Lock

Price: £42.49 (Normally £59.99)

This is the lock I personally use now, since my GSX-R600 was stolen a couple of years back (I stupidly didn’t use a lock/chain before). It’s pretty much the toughest lock I could find for a reasonable budget. The only reason I don’t rate it as our top pick, is because of the price being double the alternatives. But believe me, if your budget can stretch to the £100 price bracket, this thing, as the name suggests, is an absolute monster.

The Monster XL Motorcycle chain is ‘Sold Secure Gold Approved’ which many insurance companies will offer you a discount for. It has 14.5mm hex alloy steel chain and the padlock looks even tougher with a hardened boron steel casing. So I’d say if you can afford £100 go for this one!

Mammoth Security Hexagonal Lock and Chain

4. Mammoth Security Hexagonal Lock and Chain

Price: £42.49 (Normally £59.99)

The 12mm thick chain and 11mm hardened steel shackle lock of the Mammoth Security Hexagonal lock and chain make it another tough one. It benefits from being 1.8m long, which for the price is a great buy. This is great for those that need a longer chain e.g. if you’re locking to a ground anchor/pole that you can park quite close enough to for a smaller chain.

Oxford Big Boss Alarm Chainlock

5. Oxford Big Boss Alarm Chainlock 12mm

Price: £84.99 (Normally £169.99)
Now I write this knowing that as soon as I hit the publish button, the price of this lock is bound to go back up to the £150+ mark. But whilst it’s this low, I’d be crazy not to include it in our top 5. The Oxford Big Boss Alarm ChainLock features an ultra tough 12mm thick chain, held together by the hugely popular Oxford Boss Alarm padlock. The alarmed padlock provides that extra level of security, sounding a 100db alarm should a thief attempt to steal your pride and joy.
